24 Hour Heartbreak and Joy

Yesterday morning, August 5, 2010 our 14 year old Miniature Schnauzer, Maggie passed away from kidney failure. A mere 12 hours later, Gabbi, our 1 year old Miniature Schnauzer just disappeared from out of the fenced backyard while I was cleaning out the bird bath.

I called and called her name, I whistled for her, I even went in and got her favorite squeaky toy; all to no avail. It was dark outside by the time my husband arrived home, so he got a flashlight and searched our yard and the neighborhood for her. When he came back in he contacted HomeAgain. They had him download a picture of Gabbi in order to assist them in getting the notice of Lost Pet Poster out to shelters, vets, dog finder groups, etc. and to enable us to print the Lost Pet posters to hang up locally. He hung those up between midnight and 1 am before he headed off to bed. Losing one doggie child is heartbreak enough, but the fear of losing a second- I would not wish on my worst enemy. Needless to say, after the last 24 hours I was not to get any sleep again that night either…

I would like to say the phone was ringing off the hook 1st thing the next morning, but it was silent... Until around 11 am when HomeAgain called, saying someone in the area had found a dog fitting a possible likeness to Gabbi and asked if I would like them to patch them through to me. As if, indeed!

After a bit of confusion on both our parts; I forgot she even had a collar on, she thought Gabbi looked like a Jack Russell Terrier rather than a salt and pepper Miniature Schnauzer. Anyway, despite it all it was the kind folks who lived about 5 houses away that spotted Gabbi walking down the street last night and then saw the HomeAgain Lost Pet poster that my husband had printed from their web-site and hung up around the neighborhood.

All I can say is thanks to HomeAgain for everything (you have been simply the BEST!) and thank you to my newest dearest friends for finding and returning Gabbi to me safely.
